After 10 prior efforts, the Boro finally recorded their first league win of the 2024/25 season against play-off hopefuls Brackley Town, Radcliffe secured all three points thanks to Tunde Owolabi’s second goal in as many games.
Bernard and Jonno’s men now have the opportunity to win back-to-back games for the first time since April 13th, as we travel up to the North East in midweek league action.
The Opposition
After being crowned the Northern Premier League Premier Division Champions in 2023, South Shields were promoted to Step 2 and stabilised their position with an eighth-placed finish last season.
The last time the pair met dates back to March 25th 2023 where it was a share of the spoils in a 0-0 affair, however when they met at the Neuven Stadium, it was the Mariners who claimed all three points by winning 2-1 in Greater Manchester.
Both teams have changed managers since their last meeting; Shields have done so several times, but Elliot Dickman is now in charge. They finished eighth last season, their highest-ever result in the National League North, and just missed the play-offs under his leadership last season.
With 16 points overall, they are currently situated 13th in the standings. If they defeat the Boro, they could advance to the play-offs again if results continue to go their way.
Similar to Radcliffe’s circumstances, South Shields enter the match fresh after a 1-0 triumph, but the Mariners haven’t won back-to-back games since defeating Buxton on the 31st of August.
One to Watch
Paul Blackett, who has a wealth of experience at this level, is definitely one to watch. With his physical attributes and instinct for goal, he may cause problems for the Boro if left unsupervised in the penalty area. He is undoubtedly a productive talisman in the National League North, as seen by his 30 goals in all competitions during the previous campaign and has already scored three goals this season.
