Radcliffe FC are delighted to announce the signing of left-sided defender Callum McFadzean, who joins on a one-year deal with an option at the Neuven Stadium.
Our new number three adds to the Boro’s defensive ranks with plenty to offer the club both on and off the pitch, having earned a distinguished career and plenty of accolades which reflect his success as a professional in higher divisions.
Starting off as a product of Sheffield United’s Academy, whilst also representing England at youth level, McFadzean was promoted to the first team and featured in just under 20 games for the Blades, as well as showing his talent in loan spells away from South Yorkshire.
A brief stint north of the border with Kilmarnock ended his lengthy stay at Bramall Lane, moves to Alfreton Town and Guiseley followed, before joining Bury where he played a prominent role in a runner-up finish which gained promotion to League One for the Shakers.
After Bury were expelled from the Football League in the summer of 2019, McFadzean added another impressive achievement to his CV by helping to cement Plymouth Argyle’s place in the automatic promotion spots, once again advancing from England’s fourth tier.
His performances merited an eye-catching switch to the north east as the left footer signed for Sunderland to strengthen their hopes of returning to the Championship after a three-year hiatus. Their attempts were squandered after falling short in the play-off semi final, however the Black Cats were successful in capturing the EFL Trophy after a 1-0 victory against Tranmere Rovers at Wembley Stadium, where McFadzean started and played the full 90 minutes.
Crewe Alexandra captured his services in 2021, but his time with the Railwaymen came to a swift conclusion when Wrexham came calling, who’d recently been taken over by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney at the time.
Under the wing of former manager Phil Parkinson, after previously brushing shoulders at Sunderland, McFadzean helped the Welsh outfit achieve back-to-back promotions from the National League to League One, as well as reaching the FA Trophy final where he crossed the white line at Wembley Stadium once again, ending up on the losing side on that occasion.
He has been without a club since leaving Wrexham in high regard last summer, but is now fully prepared to get the ball rolling in a Radcliffe shirt, and the 31-year-old shared his immediate thoughts in his first interview with the Boro.
McFadzean, said: ‘It’s one of the quickest deals I’ve done in my career, I’m delighted to be here and I can’t wait to get going. The ambition from the gaffers and the Chairman align with what I want to do and I feel I’ve still got plenty more years in me, it had to be right for me to come into a football club that wants to achieve things, and that’s why I’m here.
I spoke with Nicky (Adams) about coming here and he said you’ll love the club. I’m willing to give 100% in every game, with hard work and honesty and that’s what I’m all about. When I had my first chat with the gaffers, they came across exactly the same as what I am and that’s one of the main reasons why I’ve decided to sign for the club.’
Welcome to the Neuven Stadium, Callum!
