Two goals in each half secured maximum points for Anthony Johnson and Bernard Morley’s men in a stunning display on home soil, cancelling out a late consolation by Dior Angus to go back to winning ways.
On the back of a 2-0 defeat at Scarborough Athletic on Tuesday night, one change was made to our starting eleven as Tom Walker was given the nod, but there was bigger news on the substitutes bench with the addition of Jude Oyibo who hasn’t seen any action since August following a lengthy injury.
Inside five minutes, Walker marked his return to the team in blistering fashion as he netted his fourth goal of the season, and his third since the new year to put Radcliffe ahead from the off. The midfielder picked up the ball 25 yards out from goal, before ushering into space and striking into the roof of the net with venom.
Only eight minutes later, Radcliffe’s lead was extended after a phenomenal passage of play led to Danny Greenfield passing the ball in behind for Brad Jackson, he then cut onto his left foot and thumped beyond Chris Renshaw via a slight deflection.
Southport began to grow into the game and had two opportunities to halve the deficit, Danny Lloyd and David Morgan couldn’t beat the Boro bodies standing in the way to block the ball on its travels from 12 yards out.
With moments to go before the break, Radcliffe were shouting for a third as Brad Roscoe headed the ball against the underside of the crossbar and onto the goal line from Greenfield’s corner, the referee waved play on despite the claims from the blue shirts surrounding him.
Similarly to the first half, the Boro netted early after the restart. Greenfield turned from provider to finisher with Radcliffe’s third of the afternoon, putting the game firmly out of sight for Jim Bentley’s visiting side. The ball set up perfectly for the midfielder to unleash a stunning half volley into the bottom corner of the net, before wheeling away in celebration.
George Glendon could’ve scored his first goal since signing for the club had he hit the right side of the net after Jackson dinked the ball into space for the midfielder to slam goalwards, he couldn’t guide on target on the 53-minute mark.
However, Radcliffe didn’t have to wait long for a fourth goal. Newly-introduced Luca Navarro marked the opening minutes of his afternoon by being perfectly placed to instinctively loop the ball over Chris Renshaw and into the back of the net, after a headed clearance fell kindly for the 25-year-old after 72 minutes.
Once establishing a four-goal advantage, Jude Oyibo was then introduced to the action in a double substitution which also saw Regan Riley gain minutes, making his eagerly-awaited return after not featuring in over five months.
There was something to take away from the game for the visitors as Dior Angus managed to open up a pocket of space to slide beyond Mateusz Hewelt at his near post, with minutes of the 90 remaining.
As expected, it wasn’t enough to spark an unlikely comeback with Radcliffe comfortably seeing out the rest of the game, gathering all three points in the process to end a positive affair at the Neuven Stadium.
The Boro will head north once again this coming Tuesday as we face Spennymoor Town in midweek action, join us on the road aiming for back-to-back victories at The Brewery Field.
